Life is so fast.
We eat on the run, drive from here to there and the next place, carry our takeaway coffees, work from laptops at the kitchen table (or the car, or the kids’ swimming class), answer emails while bathing the kids, do the online food shop during your afternoon conference call.
We dash from one thing (or things) to the next without a second to readjust our priorities and reflect on what we’re doing and why we’re doing it.
We need more time in our days so we add more structure and productivity hacks to make ourselves more efficient. Then we promptly fill any gap with more things – scrolling social media on the school run, listening to podcasts in the car, another new self-improvement course once the kids are in bed. We are on 24/7, and it’s still not enough.
We keep multiple tabs open in our brains with all of our thoughts and commitments on. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably also got multiple todo lists written in various apps, books and on scraps of paper. We toggle back and forth between competing tasks and commitments and thoughts, waking at 4am when our brains are still whirring to try and maintain the backlog.
Busyness is glorified, like there’s a badge of honour for the most burnt out human.
What would it look like for you to have space to unwind and breathe?
Lazy evenings in the garden.
Lying in a field listening to music.
Listening to the morning birdsong.
Gazing at the stars.
Days without clock watching and notifications and ‘things’ to do.
Where can you make some space this week to slow down and do something for you?
To relax, to get some headspace, to regroup and start afresh.
