Mine is usually a jittery, nervous feeling deep in my gut. Or sometimes it’s just a feeling of unease that I can’t really locate or describe. Sometimes it’s anger. Other times it’s a complete shutdown.
I find myself rewinding my thoughts to figure out what’s making me feel that way. Is it a worry that has got out of hand, or intuition, or just my brain getting stuck on something?
It can be really hard for us to work out what’s making us fearful. We get stuck in thinking about the possible causes and the ‘what-ifs’. But we can’t out-think our fears.
Instead, we can be curious about them, and make it a feeling exercise instead of a thinking one. This is a fab technique for adults and children, so give it a go!
Try asking:
- What does your feeling (fear, soreness, anger etc) look like?
- Where is it sitting in your body?
- What does it feel like?
- Does it have a colour? A shape? A sound?
- What does it want to say?
It doesn’t matter how random the answers are, it is all good info to help you to start to release them.
With a recent client, I asked these questions and they described the feeling as a mini hurricane in their belly. It was purple and swirly, silent and electric. It had wings that beat faster and faster, and they couldn’t make it stop. Sometimes it changed colours so quickly that they couldn’t focus on it. They had a real sense of panic and lack of control.
We held space for that mini hurricane. We observed it, gathered data, and uncovered what it needed to feel calmer. And then we did just that… and found a new sense of peace and control.
Sometimes we just need to hold space for our feelings and let them show us what we need.
